Research Interest:

His main research field is Chinese mathematics-astronomy and its interaction with the social context, especially in the Ming-Qing transitional period (c.17th century). Also serving as Editor-in-chief of the bimonthly journal, Science & Culture Review, he currently focuses on such historiographic and cultural topics as “the Needham question” and the “C. P. Snow thesis”.

Among his various writings, Da Zan Yan Shu (Fantastic Mathematics, 1993), Zhong Guo Ke Xue Yu Ke Xue Ge Ming (Chinese Science and the Scientific Revolution, 2002) and Wen Hua Yi Er San (Cultures ABC, 2006) are popular in Chinese academic circle. Meanwhile, Prof. Liu plays an active role in international affairs as well: being Efficient Member of the International Academy of History of Science, he has been Vice-President of the International Union of the History and Philosophy of Science/Division of the History of Science and Technology since 2001; and successfully organized the 22nd International Congress of the History of science, which took place in Beijing in the summer of 2005.
